Evacuation order around Sturgeon Lake Complex wildfires ended

The evacuation order for the area around the Sturgeon Lake Complex Fire has been downgraded to an alert as of 3:28 p.m. Thursday, May 24th, allowing residents to return home.

The order was in effect for those south of Township Road 720, west of Range Road 223, north of Township Road 712, west of Range Road 231, south of township road 705A and west of Range Road 230. Residents in these areas can return home but are advised to be prepared to evacuate with four hours’ notice.

According to MD of Greenview officials, the Sturgeon Lake Complex fire is still active, and nobody is allowed in or near the perimeter of the fire.

As of noon on May 24th, the two fires which make up the Sturgeon Lake Complex were estimated to be 5,752 and 3,869 hectares in size. Both are classified as being held and are 100 per cent contained.
