Charge laid in connection with suspicious fire

A 34 year-old-man is facing a charge of intentionally causing damage by fire for what police believe to be a suspicious grass fire in the city. 34-year-old Evan Bjorklund of no fixed address has been charged in connection to a grass fire in the area of 96th Street and 94th Avenue on May 16th, which caused damage to nearby Sunrise Towers.

He was released from custody after a judicial hearing and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court in mid-June.

Police are also investigating an additional suspicious fire in the area of 108th Street and 68th Avenue, which happened around 10:30 p.m. on May 17. Police says the Grande Prairie Fire Department contained and extinguished the blaze.

This investigation is in addition to the investigations into four other suspicious fires which emergency crews responded to and extinguished between the late hours of May 15th and the early hours of May 16th.
