With challenging weather conditions expected, crews reinforcing Dunes West fire guards

An ongoing damage assessment of the Dunes West wildfire is showing the most heavily impacted areas as Riverview Pines Estates with three homes lost and Spring Creek Estates with one home lost since the wildfire sparked on May 5th.

The latest update from the Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership also suggests other subdivisions in the evacuation order range also sustained property damage including The Banks at Spring Creek, Deer Ridge, Deer Run, Dunes West, Mystic Ridge, Park Meadows, and Wapiti Heights Estates.

While the conditions over the last couple of days have helped the firefighting efforts, weather conditions continue to be closely monitored on Wednesday, with thunderstorms, high temperatures, and the threat of a high-pressure system that may cause aggressive fire behaviour and a challenging firefighting situation for those on the ground.

After drones identified hot spots in the fire area overnight Wednesday, crews will now continue to focus on bucketing targeted areas, as well as getting fire suppressant onto hotspots along the bank of the Wapiti River on the southern edge of the now 1,400-hectare fire.
