City taking steps to build covered outdoor rink

The current outdoor rink at Swanavon will be replaced with a covered outdoor structure in the coming months. City council approved $386,655 in funds from the Council Strategic Initiatives Fund Monday.

$125,000 will be reallocated from the Sargent Community Park Outdoor Rink capital project, in addition to $500,000 already funded for the project. Mayor Jackie Clayton says the city’s priority is to provide a four-season recreational space and that the structure will greatly benefit the community.

“I think from the beginning it’s been a priority of the council to provide recreational space that is four seasons and this space has been mentioned as a gathering space for summer, it’s a place where kids can skate in the winter. it’s also an area where you can gather and have birthday parties there are multiple uses for this space,” says Clayton.

Councillor Chris Thiessen says he is not opposed to the idea of building an outdoor rink with a roof, however, he isn’t convinced Swanavon is the right spot for the structure.

“I’m thinking we have we got other parks in the community. If we are gonna spend a million dollars on a covered rink I want it to be in a place where thousands of people will go every single day.”

According to the city, the estimated cost for the roofing rink replacement is $993,655.
