Alberta is scrapping its advanced road test for Class 5 and 6 drivers. Starting in spring 2023, drivers who complete a two-year probation period will automatically qualify for a full Class 5 or 6 licence, without having to spend $150 on a second road test.
“Many Albertans have told us that the advanced test costs too much, is a roadblock to finding jobs and has created unnecessary red tape,” says Minister of Transportation Prasad Panda. “That’s why we are eliminating the advanced road test for passenger vehicles and motorcycles as well as the additional Class 4 road test while maintaining strong safety standards for drivers.”
In order to qualify for the full licences, GDL drivers must have no suspensions or tickets within the last year of the probation period. The period can be extended an additional year for drivers who get demerits or tickets for unsafe driving during the last year. Completing a driving course can reduce the probation by up to six months.
A Class 4 licence is required to transport passengers in taxis, ride-share vehicles, limos, small buses, and ambulances. Rather than a road test, drivers will only have to do an advanced knowledge test and medical and vision test to get a Class 4. The province hopes this change will attract more competition to the rideshare industry.
The government adds about half a million people are eligible to automatically exit the GDL program when the change is made.
