Crime Prevention Week activities planned this week

Grande Prairie Crime Prairie is in the midst of a busy week hosting events for National Crime Prevention Week.

Today the department is putting on a trade show at the Prairie Mall to showcase their various programs and partners, that will be followed by a community BBQ Wednesday. Program Manager Karen Gariepy says on Thursday they focus turns to working with the community’s young people.

“We often do, throughout the year, a number of educational events for younger students and our focus this year is on teens. With the teens we’re actually focusing on healthy relationships and some drug awareness programs also.”

Through the trade show, BBQ, and a Senior’s luncheon that was held Monday, Gariepy says they hope to meet as many demographics in the community as possible.

“This year’s Crime Prevention Week we’re tackling various areas and we’re actually targeting various audiences. Everything from seniors to families to teens. It impacts everyone in our community and we want some kind of event for everyone to attend.”

Gariepy says this week especially the goal is just to remind the community that everyone has a role in preventing crime.
