Thousands of meals heading from Grande Prairie to Cambodia

The Rotary Club of Grande Prairie is helping people locally act globally. More than 800 volunteers will package meals Saturday at the D-coy Armouries.

It’s all part of the Rise Against Hunger initiative. It’s an international hunger relief organization that aims to mobilize “the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030”. Rotarian Cheryl Montgomery says getting the meals packed is just the start.

“We fill a full sea can. That’s the full 285,120 meals. That is right to the roof on the sea can. Then from here it will go to Vancouver and from there it will be shipped to Cambodia this year.”

Montgomery says while the food is being sent abroad the impact is still felt locally.

“It is an international country that gets the benefit of the product but this is a community initiative that bring everybody together. We’ve already had 1,200 [people] volunteer for this program.”

They have filled all of the volunteer spaces but encourage anyone who still wants to get involved to drop off a donation Saturday. The Salvation Army will be at the D-coy Armouries accepting non-perishable food donations.
