The Town of Peace River will stop enforcing photo radar at the end of this year. Council decided Tuesday night not to extend its contract with Global Traffic Group, which also runs the program in Grande Prairie.
A deal was reached in spring 2014 to provide 48 hours a week of photo radar enforcement in the town, which was expanded this year to include rolling stops at stop signs. In a Request for Decision, Director of Corporate Services Greg Towne argued that although the program has raised roughly $160,000 to be used for public safety programs, there are other issues.
He notes that it’s seen as a cash grab by some residents, and that it only focuses on certain types of infractions and not a broad spectrum. Towne believes Peace River could be better served by considering its own peace officer services.
