MD of Greenview hosting community engagement session for Grovedale residents regarding Wonder Valley project

The MD of Greenview is hosting a community engagement session, exclusive to Grovedale residents, to discuss the proposed AI Data Centre Project in Greenview’s Industrial Gateway.

This comes shortly after Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Chief Sheldon Sunshine issued a letter to the Government of Alberta expressing the Nation’s discontent with a reported lack of consultation between the province and Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation regarding the project’s approval.

According to Greenview’s provided “Wonder Valley Fact Sheet,” the main talking points from the MD’s perspective come down to employment opportunities, impacts on local waterways, energy efficiency, tight security on the facility itself, and revenue-generating opportunities through streams like taxes.

Some residents in the region, including Chief Sunshine, have raised questions regarding the impact of the project on local rivers and other waterbodies; however, the MD maintains the project carries a “low impact” on river flow.

Within the fact sheet, the MD says the Smoky River’s large flow capacity and minimal current allocations make it “well-suited” to support the GIG’s water needs. According to the MD, the Wonder Valley project will utilize just 0.2 per cent of the Smoky River’s annual flow, unlike the Bow River, where approximately 60 per cent of its annual flow is already committed to irrigation and municipal supply.

The session is scheduled for February 13th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Grovedale Community Hall.
