County of GP contracts RCMP in Clairmont Municipal Police Service Agreement

The County of Grande Prairie has approved the signing of the Clairmont Municipal Police Service Agreement, contracting the RCMP.

According to the Alberta Police Act, whenever a village or hamlet reaches a population of more than 5,000, the municipality is required to provide policing services. In 2022, the Province of Alberta estimated Clairmont’s population was around 5,135, and as a result, the county made the decision to ink a new deal with the RCMP.

This comes just over a year after the county began planning a new detachment in the hamlet, which CAO Joulia Whittleton indicated was still in the process of identifying suitable land for a new facility in October 2023.

“We don’t want to spend money on a facility that could sit empty,” Whittleton said.

The County also approved $80,000 annually as part of the agreement to support a Public Service Employee position, who will provide administrative support at the detachment.

The agreement will take effect on April 1st, 2025, before it ends on March 31st, 2032.
