The Grande Prairie Intercultural Association, along with the Grande Prairie Public Library, and several other community partners have announced upcoming celebrations for Black History Month.

The month will kick off on February 1st, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. during the Opening Ceremony in the Rotary Room of the Grande Prairie Public Library. The program features a proclamation by Mayor Jackie Clayton and County Reeve Bob Marshall, along with storytime, a Jollof tasting, a braiding demonstration, a documentary screening, and a panel conversation with six panelists.

An art reception to mark the month is on the schedule at the Centre for Creative Arts and an opening reception is scheduled for February 7th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The free exhibition will run until February 28th and showcases the work of local talents Aretha Laverne, Aurel Tsafack, and two fashion designers.

The month caps off with the return of the GPIA’s gala event on March 1st from 4:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Paradise Inn. The event includes a mixer, dinner, and entertainment program with live performances, a fashion show, and a speech, followed by a dance to close out the evening.

Pre-registration is required for the gala. Tickets are free for kids under 18, $30 for adults, and $10 for adults participating exclusively in the dancing portion of the event.
