City of GP renames 107th Avenue to Tenille Townes Way

107th Avenue will forever be known as Tenille Townes Way, after the City of Grande Prairie and the GP Sunrise House held a special renaming ceremony on November 19th.

According to the city, the street was renamed in recognition of Grande Prairie local and Canadian Country Music Award winner Tenille Townes, who the city credits with making a positive impact on the community through her music and philanthropy.

The renaming ceremony was held just hours before her highly-anticipated return to Grande Prairie during her “Thing that Brought Me Here tour,” and Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says she is “pleased” to permanently commemorate the singer in the city she was born and raised in.

“We’re pleased to reveal Tenille Townes Way as a way to permanently commemorate our pride in Tenille Townes, who has proudly represented Grande Prairie on the international stage in the country music industry and beyond,” she says.

Townes has maintained her relationship with Swan City in a number of ways, including her Big Hearts for Big Kids Sunrise House fundraiser, which she started at the age of 15. Since then, the event has continued to evolve into “one of the largest and most successful” in the region, having raised more than $2 million to support costs for the Sunrise House.
