Heritage Discovery Centre closing for good Sunday

Sunday will be the last day the Heritage Discovery Centre in Centre 2000 will be open. After 20 years, it is closing its doors so the South Peace Regional Archives can move in.

Currently, the space is hosting the “$10 & A Dream” exhibit in the Kin Gallery. The facility will be open 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday for those wanting one last visit.

Grande Prairie City Council approved moving South Peace Regional Archives from the Grande Prairie Museum to the basement of Centre 2000 in November 2020, with a timeline of no earlier than 2023. It’s expected renovations will be made to include climate control features and enhance the weight capacity of the space.

The move is largely prompted by capacity concerns as the archive collection grows, as well as a desire to be closer to the Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association and Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce, which are also housed in Centre 2000. The new location will also be public-facing and an opportunity to connect with tourists and people from out of town.
