Western Alberta unemployment rate holds steady after July jump

After jumping nearly a full percentage point in July, the unemployment rate for our area held steady last month. The unemployment rate for the Banff – Jasper – Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca – Grande Prairie – Peace River region was 5.4 per cent in August.

That’s where it climbed to in July, tying it for the highest in the province, up from 4.5 per cent in June. In August 2021, the unemployment rate was 7.5 per cent. The local numbers are not adjusted for seasonal employment.

The western Alberta rate was the third lowest of all regions in the province last month, above Edmonton at 5.3 per cent and Lethbridge – Medicine Hat at 3.9 per cent. Overall, Alberta’s unemployment rate jumped in August to 5.4 per cent from 4.8 per cent in July.

Across Canada, the unemployment rate was also 5.4 per cent in August, up from a historic low of 4.9 in June and July.
