Motorcyclist killed in Highway 40 crash with bear

A Whitecourt man has been killed after crashing into a bear while riding a motorcycle near Grande Cache. The RCMP says it happened on Highway 40 north of the hamlet sometime around noon on September 4th.

It’s believed the motorcyclist was heading south on the highway when it hit a black bear that entered its path. The 57-year-old was taken to hospital by EMS with serious injuries and later passed away. His name is not being released by police.

“Grande Cache RCMP are asking the public to be extra vigilant for increased wildlife activity near area highways at this time of the year,” a release states.

It’s reported the bear was severely injured in the crash and also did not survive.
