UPDATE: Fire officials respond to hazardous material spill in Clairmont

Update: A hydrochloric acid spill in Clairmont sent one person to hospital Tuesday.

County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service along with the Grande Prairie RCMP responded to the spill shortly before 4 p.m near 157 Avenue and 89 Street. When they arrived, there was an “obvious” spill in an area of the yard. Officials were able to use soda ash to neutralize the spilled acid.

One person from the site of the spill was taken to hospital after coming into contact with the acid.

Alberta Environment has been made aware of the incident, and the cause of the spill is under investigation.

There is no threat to public safety as a result of the spill.

Emergency services are expected to be on the scene of a hazardous materials spill in Clairmont for several hours. The spill is said to be in the area of 157 Avenue and 89 Street.

The RCMP, County Regional Fire Service, and EMS are responding and the public is warned they may notice an increased presence of emergency services. Police say there is no risk to the public and no further updates are expected.
