Grande Prairie’s Mairen Lawson earns silver medal at Canada Summer Games

Grande Prairie area athletes continue to show their mettle at the Canada Summer Games. Mairen Lawson of Grande Prairie has earned the third medal for our region, a silver for Cycling Road in the Individual Time Trial.

According to games officials, Lawson was previously a triathlete but chose to focus on biking to improve her skills in 2021. It has paid off, as she had a strong start in Tuesday’s competition and was just inches away from closing the gap on the gold medallist, finishing just .4 seconds behind first place.

It’s been a successful past year for the 18-year-old, who also won a bronze medal at the 2021 Canadian Road Cycling Championships in the Junior Individual 16-kilometre time trial race. Her bronze medal at the Games is the third for our area.

Dominik Kwiecien of Grande Prairie earned a bronze medal in Men’s Open Water Swim last Friday while Marissa Laurin of the County of Grande Prairie won a bronze medal in the Women’s 200-metre Breaststroke on August 10th. They helped Team Alberta earn its largest medal in swimming at the Canada Games, finishing in second place.
