Hydrocarbon released into Lakeland dog park wetlands within permitted levels

Dog owners can go about using the Lakeland Off-Leash Dog Park more freely. The results of water quality sampling done following the release of a hydrocarbon-based product into the wetlands next to the park have determined that hydrocarbon levels are within permitted levels.

Caution tape and signs have been up in the area since the release in early June and a sample of water was taken at that time. The results have been reviewed by Alberta Environment & Parks Protection Officers and the wetlands in the area will be added to the City of Grande Prairie’s regular water sampling schedule in the future.

Regardless, the city asks residents to keep pets out of the wetland area to protect it, noting it may also be stagnant and unhealthy for pets. Signage will be posted with the recommendation.

“Wetlands are sensitive ecosystems and support a variety of migratory birds, waterfowl, foxes, insects and other species. It is best for the wetland to have minimal disturbances.”
