Hines Creek under boil water advisory

People in the Hines Creek area are being warned that their water may be unsafe to drink or use. A boil water advisory has been issued for the village after the water treatment plant lost power following Friday night’s storm.

“Power has been restored to the water treatment plant but the water may not be safe to consume,” the emergency alert reads.

Residents are told not to use tap water for drinking, preparing food, making juices, and vegetables, making rice, or preparing infant formula. People should throw away any ice, filtered water, drinks, or food made with contaminated water.

“Don’t use a home water filter to try to make your water safe,” Alberta Health Services warns. “Home water filters are not able to safely treat contaminated water.”

The tap water is also not suitable for pets to drink or for pod-style coffee makers.

To make water safe to drink, AHS says to bring it to a rolling boil for at least one minute before drinking or using to prepare food. It should be stored in a clean and covered contained in the fridge after letting it cool.
