Young Offenders Centre RFP to be ready for June

The future of the former Young Offenders Centre in Grande Prairie could soon be decided. The city purchased the building from the province for a dollar last summer, though it has sat empty since 2009.

Social Development Manager Donelda Laing says they will request proposals from organizations around the community with a set of criteria in mind.

“It will be non-profit societies who provide service to the community with a priority focus of the building having something to do with youth services and as well we will be looking at their ability to do renovations to the building.”

Initially the plan was that the YOC would go directly to a youth services organization, but the Community Living Committee has decided they want to go broader, opening up the RFP process.

Laing says she expects to have the Request for Proposals ready by the end of June. She says the city should then be able to make a decision about how they would like to move forward with the YOC sometime this fall.
