Local documentary “Able” set to debut February 3rd

A local film following a woman’s journey after an accident that turned her life upside down is set to be released next week. On November 26th, 2013, Kiesha Mastrodimos was driving herself and a friend home at night from a rural town in northern Alberta. That night, her car collided with a moose and the impact left her paralyzed from the chest down.

“Able” Director Mariah Braun feels the documentary highlights some of the most challenging parts of Mastrodimos’ life, which has led her to a new purpose.

“I feel that she has really risen to the occasion of using what happened to her as something that lifts her up. She feels it is something that allows her to have a voice and allows her to have advocacy in our community,” she says.

Mastrodimos has spent the last eight years recovering from the incident but has seen great support from the community in Grande Prairie to help her through that process.

“Her story of resilience is something that we all need today, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The support around her from Spinal Cord Injury Alberta has been a great help in her recovery. Advocates like Mieke de Groot continue to be wonderful for our community,” Braun says.

Filmmaking is something that Braun has continued to work on. It started out as an interest, she was able to meet some people locally, and things have really taken off for her from there.

“I first started getting into it by attending some local filmmaking workshops in Grande Prairie, held by the Peace Region Independent Media Arts Association. I continued to take more courses and attend workshops as my interest grew,” she explains. “Following that, I got some experience on set and I was encouraged to submit a grant application for my own idea, through Telus Storyhive.”

Anyone can watch the film for free on February 3rd as long as they have registered for the event on Eventbrite.
