Tristan Martin scores first ever goalie goal in AJHL History in Grande Prairie

On January 18th, Spruce Grove Saints goalie Tristan Martin scored the first goalie goal in AJHL history against the Grande Prairie Storm at Bonnetts Energy Centre. With his team up 5-3, the Storm had the extra attacker on the ice and that’s when Martin shot the puck into the open net.

This marks the first time Martin has ever accomplished the feat at any level.

“I’ve never tried it in a game before. My goalie partners and I practice a little bit, shooting the puck up the ice during scrimmages, but it’s something I’ve been wanting to do,” he says.

Martin, 19 years old, has accomplished a rare feat. Take NHL history, for example, goalies have scored 12 times on the open net since the league came into existence.

“It was a very special moment with a great group of guys,” he says.

When asked if he would try to score again, Martin said with a laugh “definitely, if I can.”

Martin received some national media coverage via CTV News and Sportsnet since accomplishing the feat in Grande Prairie.
