Grande Prairie STARS crews compete in simulation competition

Every year, every STARS base runs internal competitions with mock scenarios, and the winners go on to compete in an All Stars competition and eventually internationally. The nurse paramedics respond to the call and are judged based on their training.

The Grande Prairie team held theirs today, trying to rescue a baby trapped under a vehicle and the driver who went into cardiac arrest. In addition to having a friendly competition, Clinical Educator Carol Ann Doll says it also greatly benefits the nurse paramedics.

“It brings us to even a higher level of expertise, because these teams have been practicing diligently. We’ve been putting through scenario after scenario after scenario repeatedly, so they’ve practiced and practiced and practiced; it makes them the best practitioner they can possibly be.”

It’s all done with the help of Harry’s Auto Wrecking, the Grande Prairie Airport and the Fire Department. STARS regularly places in the top three in the international competition, and the team from Grande Prairie has made it in the past.
