Activity and Reception Centre opens in Smith neighbourhood

The new Grande Prairie Activity and Reception Centre is now open to the public. The facility features both drop-in and recreational activities, a mobile skatepark, and will host such activities as basketball, tennis, pickleball, volleyball, and badminton in the Smith neighbourhood.

Sports Development, Wellness and Culture Manage Stephanie Cajolais says that the building will serve as an emergency response centre as well if needed.

“We will use the facility for any large-scale response to an emergency or disaster. Any type of situation that can impact residents of Grande Prairie and the region.”

The facility was built using $3.2 million dollars of federal COVID-19 funding, as well as $800,000 in matching funds from the city. The federal funding was intended for shovel-ready projects that had to be completed by the end of 2021.

Cajolais feels the new facility will be beneficial for everyone, but especially the Smith subdivision.

“The area did not have a recreational facility similar to this one before it opened,” she explains. “Hopefully, families and individuals will be able to take advantage of the recreational and leisure opportunities it will present.”

Mayor Jackie Clayton adds the opening of the facility is a huge milestone for the community.

“It will help provide more opportunities for more youth, families, and individuals to access sport and recreation opportunities across the community. We welcome all residents to visit the facility and explore the new features available to stay active year-long.”
