City to cover NSF charges from property tax double withdrawal

The City of Grande Prairie will be covering any non-sufficient funds fees that may have resulted from an error last week that saw some people’s monthly property tax payment taken out twice. It will also waive all City-generated NSF charges for the month of December.

On December 31st, an undisclosed number of taxpayers woke up to find their accounts had been double charged for their Tax Insitutition Payment Plan. The city called it an unexpected error and maintained the second payment would be refunded.

TIPP allows taxpayers to pay their property taxes in monthly installments through pre-authorized withdrawal of funds from taxpayers’ bank account. In an update issued on January 7th, the city says it continues to work closely with its banking partner to resolve this issue.

“In the coming days, the Assessment and Taxation department will reach out to those impacted to ensure any additional NSF bank fees charged to a resident’s bank account as a result of the double tax payment are reimbursed.”

The city adds it has taken steps to ensure this will not happen again, but has not disclosed anything further. Anyone with concerns can contact the city at 780-538-0315 or via email.
