Best of Alberta Curling events ongoing at Bonnetts Energy Centre

The Best of Alberta Curling tournaments kicked off in Grande Prairie yesterday, with matches scheduled throughout the week. The tournament includes the 2022 Boston Pizza Cup and the 2022 Sentinel Storage Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Grande Prairie from January 3rd to 9th.

Colin Griffith, Executive Director of the Grande Prairie Curling Centre says that he is looking forward to seeing the rest of the tournament unfold.

“We’ve got 19 of Alberta’s best men’s and women’s curling teams here and the action has already started as of Monday. Tuesday morning’s draw features such high profile names as Kevin Koe and action begins at 9 A.M. on Tuesday,” he says.

Griffith says he is grateful for anyone that wants to support the local event throughout the week.

“We’re not expecting huge crowds or a particularly big turnout due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions. Anyone that wants to come by throughout the week at Revolution Place is more than welcome and we’re very happy to be able to proceed with the event,” he says.

The tournaments are also receiving national media attention, with Sportsnet broadcasting the semi-finals and finals from January 8th-9th.

“We’re really excited to see the event covered by Sportsnet and all of it will be live-streamed on the Curling Alberta YouTube channel,” he explains. “We’ve got a lot of local curlers with experience as colour commentators and so far it has been extremely well received.”

Griffith adds that he hopes to draw more people into the sport, young and old. “That’s always the goal. We were able to host another local event in November with 32 teams and we had an excellent turnout of 128 people. It was a good start to showcase our sport and get ready to kick things off for the Best of Alberta Curling in Grande Prairie,” he says.

Tickets for the Best of Alberta Curling start at $20 for a single draw, and $150 for weekend draws. The schedule on Tuesday includes three draws, slated for 9:00 A.M., 2:00 P.M., and 7:00 P.M.
