Grande Prairie RCMP provides tips to keep your home safe

The Grande Prairie RCMP is offering tips to ensure any place of residence is a less appealing target of property crime. The Grande Prairie area saw 27 break and enters reported in December of 2021, which marked the same total as December of 2020.

Local authorities say home security measures should be reviewed frequently, such as making sure all windows and doors are locked, as well as any sheds or garages. Other measures to take include not leaving empty boxes in the carport, yard, driveway, especially for expensive items, such as televisions. It’s best to leave as little information as possible so that thieves aren’t tempted.

When going away for vacation, arrange for someone to shovel the driveway. If a house sitter is not present, arrange for someone to pick up mail and packages, to make sure they are not sitting at the front of the house or property.

Additionally, local authorities advise not to post any vacation plans on social media. The RCMP also recommends using timers on indoor lights, and tamper-proof motion sensor lights outside any property or home, and if possible, install a doorbell camera.
