2015 property taxes more bearable for Grande Prairie residents

Taxes for Grande Prairie home owners will not be going as much as was expected.

Council initially approved a 4.2 per cent increase to property taxes for each of the next three years in January, but administration has since found an opportunity to lower that increase to 3.6 per cent for 2015.

The changes are due to assessment growth being more than expected in the budget, and the school requisition rising 8.5 per cent.

The change means taxes on an average home worth $360,000 dollars will go up by $116 rather than $129.

Mayor Bill Given commended city administration for finding the opportunity during last night’s city council meeting.

He says he is hopeful there can be similar reductions found for the next two years as well.
