New street sweeping schedule rolling out this spring

Street cleaning is a couple weeks ahead of schedule this spring in Grande Prairie. Residential street sweeping will get underway once arterials in the city have been taken care of by the end of next week.

Transportation Service Manager Robert Carroll says they will be sweeping the day before garbage collection and hopes that will help people to remember to keep their street clear in preparation.

“That means removing the vehicles from the road so our sweepers can get in and do a thorough job. Having to work around parked vehicles is difficult to do and you don’t do as good of a job and then you have to come back and try to get into some of those areas a second time. That can make it a longer process.”

The residential program is expected to take about four weeks, but Carroll says this new schedule will be lumping priority two and bus routes into that time frame.

“The priority ones, twos, and bus routes will be done first because those are the routes that have the most traffic and collect the most debris. The residential areas obviously require sweeping but they don’t accumulate nearly as much debris that the main roads do.”

Once all streets in the city have been swept Carroll says street sweepers will continue to maintain arterial routes around Grande Prairie throughout the summer and fall.
