AUMA unhappy about the province offloading onto municipalities

Despite being initially pleased about the commitment to MSI funding in the province’s recently announced budget, the AUMA does have concerns about other items being cut.

AUMA President Helen Rice says the elimination of grants in lieu of taxes on seniors apartments could cost the city as much as $200,000 dollars to recoup.

“Right at the time where we’re telling them not to download or offload to municipalities any more, we cannot handle anymore. Then this kind of snuck up on us, so while the infrastructure funding is strong and good, there are some disappointments.”

Rice says she is also disappointed to see that the province included a spending cap for student enrollments, and made cuts the ALERT program.

She says the AUMA will be meeting this week to discuss the changes.
