Grande Prairie Panthers hosting hockey provincials this weekend

The Grande Prairie Panthers are ready to kick off the 2015 A and B senior female hockey provincials at the Crosslink County Sportsplex tomorrow night.

Coach Kyle Chapple says the team is ready to show off its talent to the hometown crowd.

“The quality of hockey, it’s actually really good and it’s very competitive. We’re on the ice two or three nights a week; we take it very seriously. These girls are 100 per cent committed to this event and getting to Westerns; it’s what we play for all season.”

The panthers will be looking for their seventh consecutive provincial title on home ice, and while they’re up against teams from Edmonton Calgary and Bon Accord, Chapple says they have experience on their side.

“We’ve got a lot of girls here who’ve won quite a few provincials in a row here. We only have a couple new faces; definitely I think that’s going to benefit us. We know what it’s going to take to win because we’ve been here, we’ve done this.”

The winners of the A division, and the AA tournament being held out of town, will head to Westerns in Brandon, Manitoba.

The B division is all teams from the Peace, including Hythe, Fairview, Peace River, and Dawson Creek.
