City Council allows for election exemption

While a provincial election has not yet been called, the speculation about one has been enough to spur potential candidates into beginning preparations for one.

Grande Prairie city council last night granted an exemption for an unnamed fire captain in the city to come back to a job with the fire department at the end of a potential term in provincial government.

Mayor Bill Given says it wouldn’t necessarily be a return to the same position, simply a guarantee of employment.

“It isn’t as though the fire service would hold a position empty or vacant the entire time, and in fact administration has informed council that they for see a number of retirements coming up over the three to five years, so they felt very comfortable that they could accommodate that.”

The exemption will only be used if the fire captain in question is in fact elected in an upcoming election.
