Ag Minister weighs in on Alberta grain elevators

The town of Sexsmith started 2015 with three of its historic grain elevators still standing, now it is down to one.

Town council is still weighing the cost benefit of preserving the final elevator.

Alberta’s Agriculture Minister Verlyn Olson says while he loves the iconic symbol of the grain elevators, there’s no longer much practical use for them.

“We’re now in an environment where we have trains with 125 cars and big, super fast elevators where you can load and unload very quickly. I’d love to see them saved but in terms of the economics of actually using them, there may be places where that will work, but not always.”

One of the town’s remaining elevators was destroyed in a fire January while the second one slated for demolition was torn down at the end of February.
