Essential Energy Services lays off employees in Grande Prairie and Fort St. John

Essential Energy Services has cut approximately 20 per cent of its workforce.

Employees in Grande Prairie and Fort St. John found out this morning, along with Nisku, Red Deer, Brooks and Redcliff.

Essential employs around 1,000 employees in Alberta, Saskatchewan and the U.S., meaning about 200 people have lost their jobs.

Vice President of Investor Relations Karen Perasalo says those who were salaried employees will get severance packages, adding that days like this are a sad one for “people-oriented” companies like Essential.

The cuts are being blamed on the slowdown in activity.

Nexen, Talisman, and ConocoPhillips have also announced layoffs, mostly affecting employees in Calgary.
