Premier announces new continuing care beds in Grande Prairie

66 new continuing care spaces are being built in the Peace region.

An 18 unit addition has been approved by the province for stage two of Valleyview Courts as well as a funds to start construction on a 48 bed facility in Hythe.

Speaking in Grande Prairie, Premier Jim Prentice argues seniors facilities is where the province has fallen behind.

“We’ve had a hospital system where seniors have no other place to go if they’re not well; they may not need acute care, but they’re in an acute care bed because, frankly, we stopped building the continuing care beds that we need. So this is a big part of getting caught up.”

In total, Affordable Supportive Living Initiative Grants are going to more than 2,600 spaces, which Premier Jim Prentice says is higher than the original projection of 1,500.

It was announced earlier this week that several Peace facilities, including three in Grande Prairie, are getting sprinkler and fire system upgrades as well.
