Life Means Life legislation tabled

Legislation was introduced in the House of Commons yesterday that Peace River MP Chris Warkentin explains means the country’s most violent offenders will stay behind bars for the full length of their life sentence.

“Judges believe that the criminals should be sent away and put into prison for life; we believe that that should mean life. I think Canadians have been increasingly upset as they’ve heard the stories of prisoners who are sent away for life getting out on parole after serving just a fraction of their sentence.”

Murders involving sexual assault, kidnapping, or the killing of police officers and other particularly brutal crimes will face the automatic sentence and will never be allowed to apply for parole.

Currently, they are allowed to apply after 25 years.
