Gay Straight Alliances approved for Alberta Schools

The Tory government has reversed its position on gay straight alliances in Alberta schools.

The legislature passed Bill 10 yesterday, which has been modified since it was first introduced in December to require that alliances be created in any school where a student asks for one.

Parents will also no longer have the ability to remove their children from a class where sexual orientation is being discussed.

The discussion around GSAs began after a private member’s bill introduced by Liberal MLA Laurie Blakeman proposed mandating the alliances in any school where they were asked for, but it was effectively killed by Bill 10 which instead left the issue in the hands of school boards with the option for students to legally challenge a refusal.
