Royal Oaks school design nominated for award

The blueprint for what will be the Grande Prairie Catholic School District’s Royal Oaks K-9 school has been nominated for a design award.

The floor plan was done by Group 2 Architecture Interior Design, for the  school set to open for students in the fall of 2016, with groundbreaking to happen this spring.

One of the main aspects that tipped the school for the nomination is the distribution of open learning spaces, made possible by a slightly smaller library space.

Instead architects have spread spaces for students to work independently throughout the school, rather than focusing so much on traditional classrooms.

The school will also have a Theatre Stair configuration that can be used for as bleachers or for presentations.

The award will be handed out at the Council of Educational Facility Planners International at their upcoming conference in Banff.
