First GP Sports Council excellence awards set for Saturday

Grande Prairie’s star athletes, coaches, sport supporters and volunteers will be recognized by the Grande Prairie Sport Council this Saturday.

The Council’s first Northwest Alberta Sports Excellence Awards will be held at the Stonebridge hotel, with local athlete Ryan Blais set to speak.

Blais says it’s important to have events like this to re-energize everyone involved, and to bring them together as a community.

“For the young athletes as well it’s an opportunity to meet other athletes who might be mentors to them, and they can surround themselves with essentially a community that’s really trying to help them get to the next level. Whenever you have the chance to bring these people together it’s a good thing.”

He says having attended sports excellence awards when he was competing, he knows the value they have for the athletes.

“Athletes go through sort of peaks and valleys and I can certainly say that there was times where things were not going as well as I would have loved them to go as an athlete and these types of events can certainly help to bring you back up, get you motivated and back on track.”

There are 10 awards in total to be handed out.

The event is being held at the Stonebridge Hotel on Saturday.

Doors open at 6, tickets are $25 each.
