DC Police warn of phone scam targeting Peace Country residents

If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

That’s the message Dawson Creek RCMP is trying to spread to Peace Region residents being targeted by an ongoing fraud scheme.

Police say the scam artists are contacting victims over the phone to tell them they’ve won a substantial amount of money, but that they need to cover the cost of transferring the money via Western Union.

Once the money is sent, it is transferred overseas where it cannot be found, and there is no way for the victim to recoup the lost funds.

RCMP say if you are contacted by someone offering a similar scenario, you should try to gather as much information and then contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre as soon as possible.
