Wildrose Party bumps up leadership election

The Alberta Wildrose party has announced that they will be accelerating the process of selecting a new leader.

Party President Jeff Callaway says amid speculation that Premier Jim Prentice will call a spring election, party members are keen to have a new leader in place by the time that happens, rather than waiting until later this fall.

The party will be conducting a phone in ballot with it’s members over the span of 12 days, from March 16 to the 28, with the new leader being announced on the 28.

So far three candidates have thrown their hats into the ring, including Wildrose MLA Drew Barnes, former Conservative MP Brian Jean, and former Strathcona County mayor Linda Osinchuk.

MLA Heather Forsyth has taken the reins as interim leader since Danielle Smith crossed the floor to join the PC Party in December.

The deadline to enter the race is March 7.
