City looking to cover $1.8M deficit in snow removal budget

The city has reached the red in their budget for snow removal in Grande Prairie.

The city is about $1.8 million over budget due to extra contractor hours for snow clearing and hauling, sand and salt purchases, and overtime hours for city equipment.

City council will considering covering the deficit by drawing $1.5 million from their Winter Stabilization Reserve, leaving $1.3 million in the reserve for an future shortfalls.

Transportation Services Manager Robert Carroll says they had an extremely busy winter in late 2014 and early 2015, with higher than average snowfall and considerable ice build up around the city.
