Points West Living seniors home in Grande Prairie will soon have a new resident.
April Oakes, founder of the Infinite WOOFS Animal Rescue Society, says Dakota, an 18 month old Newfoundland-cross, may have been shot by a neighbour two weeks ago on a rural property near Morinville.
“He suffered quite a horrific gunshot wound to his back. He required two surgeries in order to save him and he had two drain tubes put in that he got out last week. He’s doing fantastic now.”
Dakota was surrendered by his owners as they couldn’t pay his $5,000 vet bill, and he’s currently in the care of the Rescue Society.
However, Oakes says the local nursing home fell in love with him.
“A lot of these people did have animals before they had to go in to a nursing home, and unfortunately they had to leave their animals behind. So, having him there, it’s going to benefit the seniors’ lives, as well as the staff members’ lives, and Dakota’s life.”
After another week of recovery, he should be making his way to his new home in Grande Prairie.
Infinite WOOFS is collecting donations to cover Dakota’s vet bill.
