Supreme Court of Canada rules in favour of doctor-assisted suicide

The Supreme Court of Canada has struck down a ban on doctor assisted suicide.

In a unanimous decision, all nine supreme court justices voted in favour of a ruling that will now allow doctors to provide help to those who are mentally competent but irremediably ill and wishing to end their lives.

The decision means that the existing legislation on doctor assisted suicide is no longer valid.

Parliament now has a year to draft new legislation recognizing the rights of clearly consenting adults to seek such services.
