School Resource Officer Program short of staff

The city’s School Resource Officer Program has been short a few bodies for the past few months.

At least one School Board has contacted the city about their concerns over the shortage.

Community Safety Director Horacio Galanti says usually the RCMP allocates between four and five members for the program.

“Currently there are two, and of course there is support from the community to go back to the usual level, however the ultimate responsibility to allocate resources lies with the officer in charge of the detachment.”

The School Resource Officer Program provides sees RCMP members to schools in the community, where they offer counselling, class presentations and education resources.

The detachment in general is short of officers, which is why the School Resource Officer Program is short in turn.

The city’s budget has allowed for 12 new officers at the Grande Prairie detachment over the next 4 years, but it takes time for those officers to get here.

Galanti says in the meantime the two current resource officers have been rotating amongst the schools. I

It could be months still before the program is fully staffed again.
