Trial for surgeon accused of sexual assault starts today

Today is the first day of trial for a surgeon in Grande Prairie facing three counts of sexual assault.

Dr. Romelito Delacruz is an ear, nose, and throat surgeon who has been accused of inappropriately examining female patients, including two that lodged complaints about incidents that allegedly occurred in 2007 and 2008, with one involving a 16 year old girl.

Charges were first laid in the fall of 2012, but the case has been delayed several times until now.

Delacruz also had his licence suspended for 6 months in November 2012, but has since resumed practice, with the stipulation that he treat only male patients.
