Small businesses are the target of a phone scam that’s being used across the country.
The RCMP Federal Policing office says in most cases, someone calls posing as an energy services provider letting the business know that their service is being disconnected due to unpaid bills.
In order to make a payment the business owner is instructed to buy a pre-paid credit card and call a 1-888 or 1-866 number to make the payment.
It’s estimated 2,000Â businesses have been targeted in at least seven provinces.
