RCMP reminding public not to leave vehicles running unattended

The Grande Prairie RCMP is reminding people to not leave their vehicles running unattended to warm them up, especially with the keys inside, as they become a prime target for potential crime.

“Every winter there are reports of vehicles left running to warm up that end up stolen,” says Constable Candace Hrdlicka. “[We] advise people not to start their vehicle and then walk away, even if for a brief second to grab something. It’ll increase the likelihood that somebody could come along and steal your vehicle, and it has happened here in Grande Prairie.”

Hrdlicka says that if a remote car starter is not an option, simply layering up staying with the vehicle as it runs to warm up is an ideal form of protection. She adds that goes for all times of day, and argues anyone who leaves their vehicle unattended for any substantial period of time is running a bit of a risk.

“There are unfortunately people who will check to see if those door handles are open and they will seize that opportunity to steal your goods.”
