City greenlights three park improvement grants

The city’s Infrastructure and Economic Development Committee has given the green light on funding for a trio of parks in Grande Prairie.

The first is just over $10,000 to help replace a 9 x 100 strip of synthetic turf for the Grande Prairie Cricket Association. Since it was initially installed at Northridge Park in 2013, the league has grown exponentially, with over 75 players taking part throughout the year.

Elsewhere, the Crystal Heights and Ivy Lake Neighbourhood Association will receive just over $4,000 to help install an orchard. The new green space will include 10 Apple trees and 63 fruit-bearing shrubs. The funding for the 3,000 square foot space will also help pay for mulch and temporary fencing.

The last round of funding, around $4,800 will be handed over to the Country Club Neighbourhood Association to build a permanent 5-foot-fence to surround its recently planted orchard area. Officials with the neighbourhood association say the fence will help stave off animals like deer and moose from getting into the green space to cause damage.

The final discussion and decision on the funding will be in front of city council on December 16th.
