STEP spotlights safe winter driving for month of December

The City of Grande Prairie Selected Driving Enforcement Program will be focusing on residents’ attention to details when driving in winter conditions.

Throughout December, Enforcement Services will be encouraging drivers to practice safe winter driving, with a push that everyone gets to where they need to go safely throughout the holiday season.

On top of the usual suggestions, which include winter tires and ensuring your vehicle is thoroughly clear of snow on the window and roof, officials have offered up several other tips to keep you safe on the roads.

Those winter driving tips include:

  • Slow down, remember that posted speed limits are intended for ideal road conditions.
  • Leave more space between your vehicle and the one ahead of you to allow for slippery stops.
  • Keep your headlights on all the time – do not rely on daytime running lights.
  • Low beam lights are more effective than high beam lights in fog or heavy snow conditions.
  • Signal well in advance of turning to give other motorists time to anticipate and react.
